6th Grade Monday Focus: Organization and Goal Setting

7th/8th Grade Focus

Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs TV host, Mike Rowe, has created the mikeroweWorks Foundation to promote vocational and STEM related careers. Like Duckworth, he also believes that grit, or a strong work ethic, is important for today's youth to have whether they plan on attending a 4-year college, a technical school, or going straight into the workforce. His foundation provides scholarships for students to train in technical schools, but in order to qualify, they must agree to take this pledge:
The SWEAT Pledge
Review each of the SWEAT pledge statements together and consider:
1. Do I agree with this statement?
2. How do I/can I demonstrate this statement?

Exit Slip: Come up with your own SWEAT statement (or choose one from the list) that will help you develop your work ethic. Tell it to your teacher before you leave for lunch.

Today’s Focus: Getting to know yourself

Do you get tired of hearing: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Are you thinking: “I have no clue!? Why does everybody else already know what they want to do? I’m only 12! Why do I have to know this now?”

As we talked about in our first lesson on college and career readiness, everyone has a different educational journey. Many times, our future goals will change based on our life experiences. However, it is useful to know about your strengths, likes, and dislikes, in order to figure out where to go on your journey. And don’t worry! You’ll figure it out.

For now, watch this Pep talk from Kid President (stop at 2:35 minutes)
